HOW TO CREATE A HABIT
We are, what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. -Will Durant
The latest surveys show that 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by the second week of February.
Does that mean that you shouldn’t make a new year’s resolution because you only have an average 20% success rate? NO! So how then can you keep it? What chance do you have at succeeding at a goal in your life? The answer is: through your actions.
We will see big change through creating a habit of smaller consistencies that we do on a daily basis! Climbing a mountain takes every step to get to that final goal of reaching the top, but it still takes every single, step. It takes discipline and determination in our daily struggles to change our lives!
Tough discipline is the ability to make yourself do what you should do when you should do it whether you feel like it or not. -Brian Tracy.
Do you have the courage it takes to take a chance on yourself? Take that leap of faith? Ask for what you have really been wanting? It doesn’t matter if it is January 1st, May 10th, August 30th or November 24th. Today is a brand-new day waiting for your resolutions. You must make the decision each and every day to achieve excellence. You must decide to make a change, you must choose to habitually change!
Excellence isn’t achieved by merely acting excellent one day and going back to normal the next. To be excellent you must change and repeat your actions day in and day out. Discipline is you best friend, it will take care of you like nothing else can.
If it is something major that you want to change in your life then the best practice to start is to change one small thing repeatedly everyday until it becomes a habit. For example; Years ago when I decided I wanted to treat my body with more respect and stop putting bad things into it, I took one small step at a time to achieve that goal. First I started with bringing my own lunches to work until that became a habit to the point that going out to eat for lunch was not a thought in my mind.
From there I kept adding to it until all of these little habits that I had formed became a new me. I’ve tried the idea of saying, “I am waking up at 4am and going for a run everyday from now on!” Guess what? That NEVER lasts! It’s drastic and too much change for the body and mind to keep up with, even if it is a great idea! The body and mind need to build a strong foundation to be able to incorporate change like that into becoming a habit!
The Idea is to start slow and steady and achieve your little goals everyday! This is what creates a new you!
We are not perfect. No one is perfect. You will fall and fail at some point in each day. Every day there will be a moment of weakness. By choosing to get back up, choosing to redirect, refocus on what it is that you are striving for is the key to excellence in every aspect of your life. To break a habit or form a habit is to change your behavior.
Form good habits and make them your masters. Habits come down to one golden rule: you can never change the things that trigger you. You can not control how you feel but you can ALWAYS choose how you behave. – Mel Robins
There is only 1% of the population that is truly successful. Truly successful at what they set to accomplish. There are more overweight people than marathon runners, more impoverished than wealthy, more sick than healthy, more lost and wondering than purposeful and driven. It takes sacrifice, it takes time, it takes patience, and above all it takes dedication to excellence to achieve an above and beyond kind of life style. If you want to live like everyone else, do what everyone else is doing. If you want to live a life of extraordinary you have to get out of your comfort zone. Put yourself out there. Knock it out of the park EACH AND EVERY DAY. If you are doing the same thing you did yesterday, you are not improving. You are not changing your life and you only get one life.
20 years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do. -Mark Twain
Picture that version of yourself each day that you want to become. If you can see that vision and take those steps toward excellence that you can envision, you won’t regret it. So, get up right now and build that person you want to be, so you can have that life of excellence you want to have.
A starting ritual is a repeated behavior that you adopt in order to trigger a new habit. -Mel Robins.
Transforming your life starts with creating a habit, just one, and then building from there. Consistent discipline through time achieves everything! We need to stay focused on the long term goal but determined in the little steps it takes to get there! Stay positive on your journey and remember that you can do anything you put your mind to!
You might not be there yet today but you have started to create a habit that will get you there tomorrow!
I wish you all the success and happiness in your everyday life!
